We’re proud to be a part of a circular economy, minimizing waste and energy use and reusing all materials so that almost nothing is discarded. The steel in a Model T may have been recycled into rebar, which was recycled into a train, which eventually became a windmill. The cycle lives on.
Steel can be infinitely recycled and reused without any quality loss. Nucor steel products are made from an average of 75.4% recycled content, with some products containing almost 100% recycled content. We also recycle more than 90% of the dust from our electric arc furnaces (EAF).
*2020 data
For 50 years, Nucor has been making steel using an electric arc furnace (EAF) that melts recycled scrap and turns it into new steel. EAFs are far less energy intensive and more energy efficient than traditional blast furnace steel making. Electric arc furnaces allow us to produce less emissions than our competitors who often make steel by melting iron ore and coking coal.
Nucor’s steel mill greenhouse gas emissions are 1/4 of the global average.*
*this includes scope 1 and scope 2 emissions.

A new $1.7 billion Nucor Steel Brandenburg facility in Kentucky will be one of only a few mills in the world capable of supporting the offshore wind market’s towers and foundations.
Advanced High-Strength Steel (AHSS) products allow vehicles to meet stricter mileage standards and lower GHG emissions than aluminum-intensive vehicles.
Our new $164MM tube mill in Kentucky (2023) will supply galvanized solar torque to America’s expanding solar energy markets.
We are committed to working with our partners to lower emissions, save energy, reduce pollution, and conduct environmental training more efficiently. Our Environmental Management System (EMS) has been independently certified to ISO 14001:2015 standards.
Our goal is for every Nucor operation to achieve ISO 14001:2015 certification for its environmental management system (EMS). Certification requires third-party endorsement from an accredited registrar. The following Nucor divisions are certified.
