ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS Receive ISO Certification
- Reducing use of oil and grease
- Minimizing use of electricity
- Implementing a site-wide recycling campaign
- Minimizing road dust...
These are just some of the objectives a Nucor mill must meet in order to achieve ISO14001 Environmental Management Systems (EMS) certification.
It's no easy accomplishment. Putting these programs in place, the "right" way, requires marathon work over many months before the benefits can be truly seen.
Since the first Nucor plant was certified in 2001, the company's philosophy has been to implement the EMS program company-wide. However, in order to work newly acquired mills into the process, certification is staggered.
This has worked out very well as each new mill, going through the certification process, benefits from what was learned in the past. This knowledge-sharing, coupled with inter-company audits of peer programs, has allowed the newer EMS to start off at higher levels than ever before.
Prior to the awarding of the ISO certification, the system must earn third-party endorsement from an accredited registrar.
It takes complete site-wide involvement to become certified. There must be communications on all levels, because when third-party auditors show up at a mill, they talk to everyone.
Currently 30 nucor mills are iso certified, with five slated to earn certification in 2007 and two more scheduled for 2008
